We've been telling you here on ABC 10 News Now about the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center being in the running for a $250,000 grant. But in order for it to win, it needs your vote! The Upper Michigan brain tumor center is currently a nominee for the $250,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant.

Michigan Primary Care Association's Back-to-School Campaign

As the school year begins next week, the Michigan Primary Care Association is launching a back–to–school campaign. The statewide program is to encourage parents with uninsured children to put enrolling them in low–cost or free health insurance coverage at the top of their Back–to–school checklist. The coverage is offered through Michigan’s HealthyKids and MIChild programs.

Water safety task force approved

After four summer drownings this year off Marquette’s shoreline, the city commission decided to go forward with a safety task force. The 7 member volunteer group will look into various options on how to create a safer beach front. Including raising awareness on the dangers in the waters and working with emergency preparedness and response.

Gas leak in Ironwood

The Ironwood Department of Public Safety says a construction crew hit a natural gas line at the intersection of lake and Celia Street. About 75 residents were evacuated, several roads were closed and gas service was turned off to about 300 homes. By three this afternoon, residents were allowed to return home and gas service was restored.

"Stuff the Bus" a huge success

The generosity of Upper Michigan is very evident today. On Saturday, ABC 10 teamed with the YMCA of Marquette County for the first annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign to help area families get their children ready to head back to school. Weekend weather great for Memory Walk

The weekend's beautiful weather played in favor for walkers participating in the Alzheimer’s association memory walk in Escanaba. With 61 walkers participating in this past weekend's Delta County Memorial Walk, the event raised over $2,000. Delta County plans on continuing to raise money till the end of October in hopes of reaching $3,850 this year.

Gas prices up

Just in time for Labor Day weekend, gas prices in Michigan jumped up 2 cents this week. AAA Michigan reports the current statewide average for regular unleaded gas is up to $2.71 a gallon.
