Kennecott Eagle Minerals says it has all the necessary state permits to operate the Eagle Mine once it's built.
But it is asking the state for a change to a groundwater discharge permit that it already obtained.
The company is having a public informational meeting with the DNRE later this week to discuss why the change is necessary.
Environmental groups are questioning the change, wondering if Kennecott is trying to avoid federal requirements.
The informational meeting is set for 7 Thursday night at Westwood High School in Ishpeming Township.
